The Pareo is the Cook Islands and Tahitian word for a wraparound skirt used by woman as men used a loincloth, called Maro.

The meaning has been evolving due to the trendiness of such cloth and it is now used by men and woman. Also the term Pareo evolved from being just used for skirt type of cloth to being also used as Cotton Pareo Towels which are used worldwide to go to the beach, to go for a walk in the park, to a camping trip to the mountains, to festivals or birthday parties among many other type of events.
